ABS expands US Dredger class leadership

A second Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC (GLDD) trailing suction hopper dredge (TSHD) is to be built to ABS class at the Conrad shipyard.
Capable of dredging in depths of up to 100ft, the 6,500 cubic yard capacity vessel is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2025 and will be a sister ship to Galveston Island, currently under construction at the shipyard. Conrad to the ABS class, with delivery scheduled for early 2023.
Steve Becker, Senior Vice President, Fleet Engineering at GLDD, said, “As a leader in the US dredging industry, Great Lakes continues to invest strategically in its dredge fleet. The dredge will be equipped with high horsepower direct drive installation, shore pump, dredge system automation, dynamic positioning and tracking, US EPA Tier 4 compliant engines and additional features designed to minimize the impact of its dredging process on the environment. Tier 4 compliant engines significantly reduce the vessel’s climate footprint, while other incorporated features minimize turbidity and entrainment of marine species. This highly automated new build vessel will be well suited for multi-purpose applications on various types of projects. It will be deployed for channel deepening, maintenance dredging, beach nourishment and coastal restoration projects to meet our nation’s marine infrastructure needs and support the dredging requirements of offshore wind projects in the developers.
