Experts say that on average this Independence Day will be around 17% more expensive than previous years as prices for fireworks and food have soared.

NORTH DRUID HILLS, Ga. — Celebrating this July 4 will cost more than in previous years.

On average, this Independence Day will be about 17% more expensive than previous years.

Douglas Bowman, professor of marketing at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, says several factors are linked to this, including supply issues.

“Think of logistics costs, gasoline to get products from manufacturers to other manufacturers, from producers to stores, if it’s food products, and then just the general cost of doing business has created these inflationary pressures,” he explained.

Data shows that 4th of July common goods are on the rise this year:

  • Chicken – up 27.9% to average $8.62/lb
  • Ground beef – up 36% to average $9.58/lb
  • Hot Dogs – up 37.4% to average $5.22/pound
  • Hamburger buns – up 55.4% to an average of $2.58
  • Ice cream – up 14.1% to average $5.35/half gallon

So what are some things people can do to save?

“With economic downturns, one of the things you want to start watching is the gap between national brands and private brands. Usually that gap starts to increase a little bit during downturns because national brands do fewer discounts,” Bowman said.

Bowman said to look for the store brand, exclusive to one retailer. He said the quality is just as good for less money.

“The national brands that you then pay for a lot of the infrastructure around the brand and the advertising that you don’t necessarily get, that’s not an investment that private brands make,” he said. he declares.

Also, visit several stores. He said that while we are in times of inflation, you could get more for your money at hard discounters like Aldi or Lidl.

“In the time of COVID, we tried to consolidate our purchases into one store, so we minimize our exposure. Now there is an opportunity to go back to the pre-COVID days where you can visit multiple stores, like a Aldi or like a Lidl. They don’t have a choice, but you will definitely like their prices,” he added.

Other suggestions include a budget and a list of exactly what you want. Also, if possible, buy in bulk.

The costs of fireworks, another 4th of July staple, have also skyrocketed.

According to the National Pyrotechnics Organization, supply costs have increased by 20% and shipping costs are $30,000 more per shipping container this year.

Fireworks vendor Lameka Watley has a store outside the Kroger in downtown Toco Hills.

“In some of our locations, our shelves are already pretty much empty,” she said. “Things are starting to fly off the shelves and I think by the 4th of July we’ll be pretty much empty here.”

Rising supply costs have caused some retailers to increase costs by 35% or more for 2022.

“Over the past five years, there’s been a 20% jump that I’ve seen before I even started doing this,” Watley added. “A lot of people are a little surprised – like, ‘Oh my god, they’ve gone up,’ but people are still buying. Some people are like, ‘we don’t care, we want fireworks.'”

Experts said prices are expected to keep rising until the end of the year.
